Changing Default Authentication Method

This guidance will provide you instructions on how to update your current authentication method to a different available method. For example, if you are experiencing issues with receiving SMS messages due to poor mobile signal, you can switch over to Microsoft Authenticator which will work over the organisations WiFi.

  1. Navigate to https://aka.ms/mfasetup

  2. Enter your NHSmail e-mail address SignIn

  3. You will now be re-directed to the NHSmail login page. Enter your password and press 'Sign in' to continue.

  4. This will now prompt you for your current authentication method, please confirm this to continue.

  5. A page titled 'Security Info' will now appear and this page displays your current configured method(s). SecurityInfo

  6. To add a new method, select 'Add sign-in method'. Add-SigninMethod

  8. Once a new method has been configured, you now need to change the default sign-in method. Select 'Change' alongside "Sign-in method when most advisable is unavailable:" ChangeDefaultMethodDropdown

  9. You will now be presented a dropdown selection. If you have configured Microsoft Authenticator, select 'App based authentication - notification'. ChangeDefaultMethodDropdown

  10. Select 'Confirm' to complete the change.

  11. Your default authentication method has now been updated and you will be prompted for this upon next login.
