Using MS Authenticator to Log into NHS Mail

This short guide explains how to use MS Authenticator to log into NHSMail (assuming enrolment has been completed).

NHS mail uses the Number Matching feature in the Microsoft Authenticator app.

Number matching involves entering a number from your computer screen into the Authenticator app.

Follow the steps below to sign in to NHSMail with MFA using Microsoft Authenticator:

  1. Navigate to https://portal.nhs.net/
  2. Click "Login"

  1. Enter your account details and click "Sign in"

  1. When logging in to https://portal.nhs.net/, you will be presented with a two-digit number

  1. The Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device will prompt you to authenticate the log in via a push notification

  1. Type the two-digit number into the app to complete the approval

  1. The NHSMail portal will then open

Please note: You won't be able to install or use Microsoft Authenticator on Apple Watch. Microsoft recommend that you delete Microsoft Authenticator from your Apple Watch, and sign in with Microsoft Authenticator on another device.
