How to Enrol for MFA in NHS Mail using SMS
Before you can start using MFA, you need to enrol. This short guide explains how to self-enrol and configure SMS authentication.
Follow the steps below to enrol for MFA:
- Navigate to https://portal.nhs.net/
- Click "Login"
- Enter your account details and click "Sign in"
- Click "Profile"
- Click "My Profile"
- Click "Self-Service"
- Click "Self-enroll for Azure MFA"
- Click "Confirm"
Now that you have enrolled for MFA, you will need to configure the SMS Authentication for your account.
Setting up SMS Authentication
Work through the steps detailed below to complete the setup process:
- Navigate to https://portal.nhs.net and click the button to log in
- Enter your credentials and click "Sign in"
- Click "Click me to enrol for Multi-Factor Authentication"
- Choose the relevant account for your NHS mail account (if more than one account is showing).
- Click the 'Next' button if this screen appears.
- By default, the Microsoft Authenticator option will appear. However, to use SMS or Phone call, select "I want to set up a different method.

- You will now need to select "Phone" from the dropdown selector.

- You will now be prompted to enter in your desired phone number to receive the SMS message, please also ensure you select "United Kingdom (+44)" from the dropdown menu . Once you have entered your phone number, press 'Next'.

- An SMS message containing a 6 digit code will now be sent to the configured phone number. Enter this code into the text box and press 'Next'.

- If the code is correct, you will now be prompted with a confirmation screen to advise your phone was successfully registered.

- The setup process is now complete. Click "Done". You can now close this web browser tab completely.
